In 1993, a new type of device came about: the Personal Digital Assistant. These were like mini digital notebooks to keep your address book, notes and calendar all in one place.

Around the same time, mobiles with SMS began to emerge.
Then came the iPhone. It was the first phone that gave you access to a much fuller version of the internet. But the internet isn't really what got us here...
In fact, if you go to dumbphonefinder.org and filter for essential features--like the ability to scan QR codes or tap-to-pay--you’ll find there isn’t a single device that has all of them. When you can’t get home at 2 AM or pay for the tube, you’ll eventually realise you need to switch back to your smartphone.</image:caption>
The App Store created a new category of tech companies that for the first time could use software to actually touch, and even alter, the physical world. Today, almost every car can become an uber, every home an Airbnb, and any restaurant can deliver food across the city. Our infrastructure became much more efficient. </image:caption>
